New York, 1973. Tommy Kelly is released from prison. Young, charming, damaged and restless, he has his whole life ahead of him. Yet Tommy only knows one kind of life.
Rejoined with his childhood sweetheart, Catherine, he starts working for her uncle, the Hell's Kitchen crime boss, Billy Flynn. King Billy's world is brutal, and Tommy settles in. But when he keeps crossing paths with John Savarese, the ADA who first locked him up and now doesn't even recognize him, Tommy acts on a plan to establish independence, a desperate plan that goes terribly wrong and sends the whole lot careening toward an explosive ending.
Through its vivid characters and riveting prose we are made companion and captive to this unrelenting tale. Lee's writing is so absorbing and original, so full of insight into the criminal mind, we are alarmed to find that in a race to pursue the book's end we too have been led into the darkness.

This book was remarkable. I did not want to put it down once I started reading it. It starts off very subtle and the drama increases with each chapter. I grew up in the Hells Kitchen area in the 1960's and 70's and later became a police sergeant on NYPD. The book is so realistic for events taking place 40 years ago. The picture painted of Hells Kitchen brought back vivid memories. At times I felt like Mr. Lee was inside my head 40 years ago and reading my thoughts.I remember the Howard Johnsons Hotel on Eight Ave.and 52nd Street as much as I remember the priests at the Sacred Heart Church. His attention to detail was nothing short of remarkable. I say that as a resident of the neighborhood during the period covered in the book. There is a lot of intimate detail in the book that one only can imagine but, I was there it is real.As a police Sgt.familiar with the workings of the Justice System in NYC I felt like I knew the prosecutors (ADA's) covered in the book, they were real. And that is what makes the book so interesting. There are so many twists and turns, one cannot predict what is going to happen next. And as a result the book picks up steam as you read through each page. The dialogue is so real not only what is spoken but the thoughts that are revealed in the characters minds. What happens in prison can happen in any prison. But what happens in the street could only happen in Hells Kitchen in the early 1970's. Forty years ago the residents of the area and the bars and restaurants are completely different than they are now. No cell phones, no texting, no 24/7 cable news channels...
The last 70 pages of the book take off like a rocket. Events happen new people are introduced old characters are struggling to hang on. From one page to the next you cannot predict never mind imagine what is going to happen next. The characters really explode you see the savagery in the ones you expected, but you also see kindness in some of the characters and they play off each other so well. The ending of the book is fascinating because it is so real. It is not a happy ending nor is it a sad ending. It is more like the ending of a well played chess match. Except for the fact it does not end like a game. It ends with the characters living in life on life's terms and not their own terms.

There in the Darkness Anthony Lee 9781940068008 Books Reviews
From the beginning of this novel until the end, this book grabs hold of you. The characters are well defined both physically and psychologically, so you can picture them clearly in your mind as you are reading. The story is very engaging, and there are no lulls in the delivery. The characters and the story continue to pull you along in a brilliant prose form. I was not disappointed in any way in reading this book, and look forward to reading this author's next.
Anthony Lee's "There in the Darkness" explores the Mad Max world of New York City in the early 1970s. It was a city coming apart at the seams. Rampant police corruption, economic and social stagnation cast a long dark shadow everywhere. No one was safe. Ethnic conflicts were boiling. Violence was always near. "There in the Darkness" brings special focus to the macho nihilism of Hell's Kitchen, the Irish-dominated West Side. The author's gritty characters follow similar tracks left by NYC chroniclers Claude Brown (Black Harlem), Piri Thomas (Spanish Harlem) and Jim Carroll (The Bronx). Anthony Lee captures adeptly the time and the culture of New York City. John Mullane
I loved Martin Quinn. The characters were perfectly drawn. Dialog and mannerism's were great. Story kept my interest. I was surprised it didn't get more fanfare, and I had high expectations for his next book. There in the Darkness started slower for me. It took me a little longer to get hooked by the characters, but twenty pages in I couldn't stop reading. Great characters and great story. Looking forward to the next Anthony Lee novel.
judging from the other reviews. it must be me ,cause the writing style just didn't do it for me.like a mamet movie sorta. held it out there but didn't deliver.
When I first ordered this novel off of , I was intrigued by the description and the title. I had previously read 'Martin Quinn' by Anthony Lee, so I already knew that this author is a hypnotic story-teller. I had no idea what I was really in for with 'There in the Darkness'. Putting this novel down becomes next to impossible once you are a few chapters in. Every time you may feel satisfied to put the book down for the night, Lee hooks you right back in for another chapter. Even after putting the book down, the realistic nature of the narration stays with you. I would lie in bed attempting to sleep, playing the scenes over in my head, and reminding myself that this is not real so there is no reason to feel sympathy for these fictional characters. Lee’s character development is meticulously exceptional with multiple characters; I found myself struggling with whom to pull for in the end. He brings the good out of those characters that seem inherently bad, and he reveals the life struggles of several characters that all readers can relate to, connect with, or be touched by. The images of life in prison and in the mafia world of the 70’s in Hell’s Kitchen are disturbing and raw at times, but it is the personal journey of Tommy Kelly to fight his predestined identity and the fate of the casualties from that journey that leaves the reader truly haunted. I highly recommend this book.
If the prologue to Mr. Lee's book doesn't grab you, nothing ever will. "He was leaking blood..." I had to know who was bleeding and I hadn't even met any of the characters yet. By the time this compelling novel ended I knew that every one of them had been moving, inexorably, towards his own knife blade. Taking action, responding, making decisions and many of them bad ones.
The author took me by the elbow and led me into a world I've only glimpsed from a distance. He gave me enough detail and description to make it all vivid without placing a word on any of the pages that wasn't necessary.
I've been thinking a lot about Karma since reading There In The Darkness. What is already out there, waiting for us? How can we know when "...something wholly new has been set into motion," something that we are going to have to respond to? How can I learn to "hear it, what the universe is telling" me?
